Our minds are remarkable at helping us focus on what's important. To keep us from becoming overwhelmed, they quietly filter out much of what we see every day. It's why you can drive the same road to work for years and suddenly notice a tree, a flower, or a view you've somehow never really seen before.
The world didn't suddenly become more beautiful. You simply noticed it.
A beam of sunlight through the trees. A hawk circling overhead. The scent of pine after a summer rain. The smooth surface of a river stone shaped by years of flowing water. These small wonders have always been there, patiently waiting for someone to pause long enough to appreciate them.
Wonder Is a Practice
Children seem to find wonder almost everywhere. A feather on the ground can become a treasure. A line of ants can hold their attention for several minutes. They aren't rushing to the next thing, they're fully present with the one in front of them.
As we grow older, life becomes fuller with responsibilities, deadlines, and distractions. We don't stop appreciating beauty because we care less. We simply spend less time looking for it.
The wonderful thing is that wonder isn't something we lose. Like gratitude or kindness, it's something we can practice.
Finding Eutierria
The next time you're outside, pause for a moment. Feel the breeze. Listen to the birds. Notice the colors around you. Pick up an interesting stone or watch the clouds drift overhead.
The earth is still offering us small wonders every day. Sometimes, finding a little eutierria, a joyful connection to the earth, is as simple as remembering to notice them.
