There’s something sacred about tending to your space wiping down surfaces not just for cleanliness, but for peace. But for many of us, cleaning hasn’t always felt safe.
The truth is, many modern store-bought cleaners are full of toxic ingredients. Harsh chemicals that promise to sanitize and sparkle can actually leave behind something far more dangerous. Some emit fumes so strong they sting your lungs, burn your skin, or worse can be deadly if mixed the wrong way. Ammonia and bleach? It’s not just a bad combination it can kill you.

I’ve learned this the hard way. Even with a window open and water running, I’ve struggled to breathe while using certain “everyday” cleaners. My chest would tighten, my throat would burn, and sometimes I’d feel nauseated or dizzy for hours afterward. It felt absurd why should something meant to clean make you feel sick?
Now that we are parents, that fear has only grown. It’s terrifying to know that something as common as a spray bottle under the sink could seriously harm my children if they got curious and grabbed it. A moment’s distraction, a lid not tightly closed it’s enough to change everything.

That’s why we’ve made the decision to switch to natural, homemade cleaners. Because peace of mind shouldn’t come with a warning label.
🌿 Simple, Safe, and Earth-Rooted
This DIY all-purpose spray is becoming one of our go-to staples. It’s made with just a few ingredients citrus peels, herbs, and vinegar but don’t let the simplicity fool you. It’s powerful, effective, and deeply calming to use. It’s also safe around kids, pets, and anyone sensitive to harsh chemicals (like me!).
You won’t find “fragrance” (code for mystery chemicals) here. Just real ingredients you can pronounce ones that cleanse your space and uplift your spirit.
🍋 DIY Herbal All-Purpose Spray Recipe
What You’ll Need:

1 large glass jar (quart mason jars work great)
Citrus peels: lemon, orange, grapefruit, or lime
Fresh or dried herbs: lavender, rosemary, thyme, sage, or mint
White distilled vinegar
Cheesecloth or fine mesh strainer
Reusable spray bottle (amber glass preferred)
(Optional) Essential oils like lemon, lavender, or tea tree
Instructions:
Fill your jar halfway with citrus peels and herbs. Try calming lavender and lemon, or energizing rosemary and grapefruit.
Top with white vinegar. Fill the jar to the brim, covering all plant material. Seal the lid tightly.
Let it infuse. Place in a cool, dark spot for 2–3 weeks. Shake gently every few days.
Strain it. After infusing, strain out the solids using cheesecloth or a fine strainer. Compost the scraps.
Dilute before using. Mix the vinegar infusion with water in a 1:1 ratio in your spray bottle.
Optional: Add essential oils. Lemon and tea tree add an antimicrobial boost, while lavender brings calming notes.
✨ Why We Call It “Cleaning with Intention”
This isn’t just about a cleaner counter or a streak-free table. It’s about feeling safe. It’s about protecting the ones you love, using what nature offers, and infusing even your chores with mindfulness.
Cleaning used to feel like a battle against mess, against chemicals, against the anxiety of what could go wrong. But now, it feels more like an offering. A ritual. A moment to reset, using ingredients that heal instead of harm.
🧡 From Our Home to Yours

If you're feeling overwhelmed by the transition, start small. One spray bottle. One jar of peels. One mindful choice. You don’t need to overhaul your whole home in a day you just need to begin.
Let your home be a space of safety and intention. Let your cleaners support your breath, your skin, your children’s future. This isn’t just DIY it’s reclaiming the way we care for the places and people we love.
