You Don’t Have to Go Far to Find Wild

When someone says they want to spend more time in nature, we usually know what they mean. Go for a hike. Head to the lake. Walk through the woods. Get away from town for a while.
And those are wonderful ways to experience the natural world, but they can also make it seem like nature is a place we have to travel to.
It isn't.
Nature is happening around us all the time. Birds nest on buildings. Plants grow through cracks in pavement. Insects build entire little worlds in our backyards. Rain falls over highways just as it does over forests, and the same moon hangs above a crowded city and an empty mountain.
We don't have to go very far to find wild things.
We're Part of the Same System
We also have a habit of talking about humans and nature as if they're separate. But biologically, we're as much a part of the natural world as anything else living here. We depend on plants for oxygen and food. Our bodies are mostly water. The minerals and nutrients that make up our bodies come from the Earth. Our lives are still influenced by sunlight, seasons, temperature, weather, and the ecosystems around us.
We've built houses, roads, cities, and technology, but none of that removed us from the system that supports us. We're still living right in the middle of it.
There's More Around Us Than We Notice
The interesting part is how easy it is to stop seeing it. A bird on a power line becomes background scenery. We walk past the same tree every day without really looking at it. Clouds roll overhead while we're thinking about where we need to be next.
But pay attention for a few minutes and there's usually something going on. Watch a hummingbird defend a feeder. Turn over a rock and see what's underneath. Notice how many different plants are growing along one sidewalk. Look at the moon when you step outside at night.
You don't have to know the species or understand the science behind everything you see.
Curiosity is enough.
Keep an Open Mind
Connecting with nature doesn't have to mean having some huge, life-changing experience in the wilderness. Sometimes it's simply recognizing where we already are.
We spend our entire lives on a living planet, surrounded by other living things and depending on natural systems every second we're here. There's a lot to experience when we stay curious enough to notice it.
Take the hike. Go camping. Swim in the lake. Stand somewhere so beautiful that you forget what time it is. But don't overlook everything in between. The wild isn't only waiting somewhere beyond the city limits. It's growing, flying, changing, and living all around us, and we're part of it too.
